Sri Rudram - Part 4 - Anuvagam 10 & 11.

Anuvagam 10 of 11.

In the tenth Anuvaka Rudra is again asked to shed his fury and shower benevolence by displaying His Pinaka bow without arrows and to gracefully appear wearing the tiger skin, with pleasing countenance, ready to shower boons upon his devotees. This Anuvaka is chanted for possession of wealth, cure of diseases, removal of fear, getting rid of the enmity of powerful people, absence of fear from all living beings, having the vision of Bhairava (Shiva in his most fearful aspect), absence from dangers and fears, blessings and the absolution of sins.

द्रापे अन्धसस्पते दरिद्रन्नीललोहित ।                 
draape andhasaspathe daridrannilalohitha |                                             
एषां पुरुषाणामेषां पशूनां माभेर्मारो मो एषां किञ्च नाममत् ।

easham 􏰂purush􏰀̍aanaa􏰅m easham 􏰂pasuna􏰂m maabhermaaro mo easham kin􏰂chanaamamath ll 

Meaning:
Oh Parameshwara, you are the producer of disgusting conditions for sinners and also the master of food (giver of food) and protector of all. You remain unattached with anyone or anything, possessing nothing for Yourself. With Devi occupying half Your body, you appear half blue and half red. Please ensure that my offsprings as well as my dependants become free of fear (of Your punishments) and are fully protected by You from diseases.

Mantra  2


या ते रुद्र शिवा तनूः शिवा विश्वाहभेषजी ।
ya the rudra si̱vaa thanuh􏰁 sivaa visvaahabhesh􏰀aji 

शिवा रुद्रस्य भेषजी तया नो मृड जीवसे ॥

sivaa rudrasya bhe􏰀shaji thayaa no m􏰃rud􏰄a jeevase 


Meaning: 

Oh Parameswara, the auspicious One, You are the medicine for removal of disease, poverty etc. at all times. As Shiva, You are the medicine for curing the disease of samsara.  Please make our lives comfortable.

Explanation:
Parameswara has two forms- ‘Sivaa’ and ‘Ghora’. Of these, ‘Sivaa’ can be considered as two- one, which removes all diseases and miseries like poverty of all people at all times and bestows comforts; other, which bestows Atmagnana, destroys the misery of samsara like birth, death etc. and grants the bliss of Moksha. The term ‘Visvaahabheshaji’ refers to the first form and ‘Rudrasyabheshaji’, the second. The prayer here is for grant of comfortable life by both these forms.

Mantra  3
इमाँ रुद्राय तवसे कपर्दिने क्षयद्वीराय प्रभरामहे मतिम् ।
imaang􏰂 rudraaya thavase kapardhine ksh􏰀ayadhveeraaya prabharaamahe mathim |
यथा नः शमसद्विपदे चतुष्पदे विश्वं पुष्टं ग्रामे अस्मिन्ननातुरम् ॥
yathaa nah samasaddhvipadhe chathush􏰀̍padhe vimsva􏰂̍ pusht􏰇a􏰂m graame 
asminnanaathuram 

Meaning:
We perform our mental dhyanam and offer our prayers, by following specially prescribed methods of worship, to Parameshwara, 

  • Who is strong with unparalleled valour, 
  • Who has matted locks of hairs and accomplishes tasks not capable by anyone else,
  • One whose enemies are destroyed by His mere sight, 
  • Who dispels the misery of samsara.  
Through this prayer let all of us including our animals with two and four legs, living in our village, be comfortable, be well nourished (with no deficiencies), and be free from diseases.

Mantra  4
मृडानो रुद्रोत नो मयस्कृधि क्षयद्वीराय नमसा विधेम ते  ।
mrudaano rudro̱tha no mayas kr􏰃udhi kshayadhveeraaya namasaa vidhema the |
यच्छं च योश्च मनुरायजे पिता तदश्याम तव रुद्र प्रणीतौ  ॥
yaccha􏰂 cha yoscha manuraayaje pi̱tha thadhaayaama thava rudra pran􏰅ithau 

Meaning:
Oh Parameswara, grant us our desires and make us comfortable. Further,  grant us bliss of Moksha.  We prostrate and worship You, the destroyer of our virulent sins. We pray that the happiness of this world and the next, untouched by sorrow, attained through Your grace by Manu, the father of all humans, may also be granted to us.

Explanation:
Parameswara! Grant us cattle, sons, wealth, food etc. and make us live comfortably in this world. Further, please also grant us the bliss of Moksha. Please do not think as to how to grant Moksha to these sinners. We prostrate and worship you.  However terrible our sins may be, will they not be dispelled after we have worshipped you? Kshyadviraya was interpreted earlier as the destroyer of enemies by mere sight. Or, we may also interpret that all the virulent sins are destroyed, once we worship him. That through Parameswaras grace, all happiness of this world as well as the next is attained is not something new, but borne by tradition. 

Mantra  5 
मानो महान्तमुतमानो अर्भकं मान उक्षन्तमुत मा न उक्षितम् ।
maano mahaanthamuthamaano arbhaka􏰂m maana uksh􏰀anthamutha maa na uksh􏰀itham |
मानोवधीः पितरं मोत मातरं प्रिया मानस्तनुवो रुद्र रीरिषः ॥
maanovadhi􏰁 pithara motha maatharam􏰂̍ priyaa maanasthanuvo rudra reerish􏰀aha􏰁 |

Meaning:
Oh Parameswara,  we pray to you not to trouble, but protect from diseases, all aged persons, children, youth, foetuses in womb, our father and mother. Please do not trouble  our bodies with diseases.

Mantra  6
मानस्तोके तनये मान आयुषि मानो गोषु मानो अश्वेषु रीरिषः ।
maanasthoke thanaye maana aayush􏰀̍i̱ maano go􏰀shu maano asvesh􏰀̍u reerish􏰀aha􏰁 
वीरान्मानो रुद्र भामितो वधीर्हविष्मन्तो नमसा विधेम ते ॥
veeraanmaano rudra bhaamitho vadheerhavish􏰀mantho namasaa vidhema the' 

Meaning:
Oh Parameswara, we pray to You not to be angry with us (for not having done things meant to be done). Please spare our children and sons from trouble. Please do not shorten our  lifespan because of our sins. Please do not trouble our cows and our horses. Please do not trouble our servants. Please be pleased with Havis (like Charu, Purodasam etc.,) and other offering, prostrations and services offered with devotion by us.

Mantra  7
आरात्ते गोघ्न उत पूरुषघ्ने क्षयद्वीराय सुम्नमस्मे ते अस्तु ।
aaraatthe' goghna utha poorush􏰀aghne ksh􏰀ayadhveeraaya sumnamasme the' asthu 
रक्षा च नो अधि च देव ब्रूह्यथा च नः शर्म यच्छ द्विबर्हाः ॥
raksh􏰀a cha no adhi̍ cha deva bruhyadha cha nah sarma yachcha dvibarha􏰁̎ 
Meaning: 
Oh Parameswara, destroyer of cows, children, grandchildren and warriors of sinners, please  grant us dharshan of Your peaceful form and protect us and speak in our favour (if there is objection from devas as to how you can protect sinners like us). Further, Oh  Parameswara, bestow us with increased happiness including all material benefits in this world and with Moksha in the next world.

Mantra  8 
स्तुहि श्रुतं गर्तसदं युवानं मृगं न भीममुपहत्नुमुग्रम् ।
sthuhi sru̱tham􏰂 garthasadam yuvaana􏰂m mrugam na bheemamupahanthumugram |
मृडा जरित्रे रुद्रस्तवानो अन्यन्ते अस्मन्निवपन्तु सेनाः ॥
mrud􏰄a ja̍rithre rudrastavaano anyanthe' asmannivapanthu senaa􏰁̎h

Meaning:
Oh Parameswara, You are the Soul,  dwelling within our heart-cave, always youthful and very handsome. You are fierce and terrible like a lion, while destroying the wicked. We   praise You, Oh Parameswara, please bestow us with all comforts, healthy bodies (though destructible over time). Please let Your armies  destroy our sins, instead of troubling us by  spoiling our comfort (due to our sins).

Mantra  9 
परिणो रुद्रस्य हेतिर्वृणक्तु परित्वेषस्य दुर्मतिरघायोः ।
parino rudrasya herthivrun􏰃̍􏰅akthu parithveshasya durmathi raghaay̱o􏰁 
अवस्थिरा मघवद्भ्यस्तनुष्व मीढ्वस्तोकाय तनयाय मृडय ॥
avasthiraa maghavad̍hbhyasthanush􏰀va mee􏰄dva̍stho̱kaaya thanayaya m􏰃rud􏰄aya

Meaning:
Oh Rudra, You are bubbling with anger on all four sides, due to the sins committed by those having evil thoughts of troubling others. O Parameswara, granter of all desires of devotees, please ensure that your faultless weapons and anger do not attack us (due to our  past sins) and leave us alone. With us, performing prayers and prostrations, please withdraw those weapons  and protect our children and sons and grant them comfort. 


Mantra  10
मीढुष्टम शिवतम शिवो नः सुमना भव ।
meed􏰄hushtama sivathama sivona􏰁̍ sumana bhava |
परमे वृक्ष आयुधं निधाय कृत्तिं वसान आचर पिनाकं बिभ्रदागहि ॥
parame vru􏰃ksh􏰀a aayudham nidhaaya kr􏰃tthi 􏰂vasaana̱ aachara pinakam bibhradhaagahi 

Meaning: 
Oh Parameswara, the bestower of all desired objects to worshippers! Please be granter of auspiciousness, well disposed and kind to us. As an indication of this, please leave all your terrible weapons in the superior banyan tree in Kailasa, out of our sight and come before us, wearing tiger-skin and holding your bow in hand (without arrows) as a decoration.

Explanation:
It has been described that Sri Parameswara is seated in a banyan tree in Kailasa, 100 yojanas tall and 175 yojanas wide (one yojana is roughly 13 kilometres) and that banyan tree is the refuge of those anxious to get Moksha. Here it is prayed that the weapons be left in that tree. As Parameswaras form with his bow Pinakam and wearing tiger-skin is praised as bestower of many merits in Sruti passages like Pinakahasta: Krittivasa:Praneswara: Krittivasa: Pinaki etc., it is prayed here that he should appear in that form.

Mantra  11
विकिरिद विलोहित नमस्ते अस्तु भगवः ।
vikiridha vilohitha namasthe' asthu bhagava􏰁ha 
यास्ते सहस्रँ हेतयोन्यमस्मन्निवपन्तु ताः ॥
yaasthe' sahasragm hethayonyamasmannivapanthu taah􏰁 

Meaning:
Oh, Parameswara, Who is of white complexion, possessor of all glories, holding thousands of weapons in hand, we offer our prostrations to You. Please destroy all our sins (which are our enemies) which cause miseries like disease, poverty etc.


Mantra  12
सहस्राणि सहस्रधा बाहुवोस्तव हेतयः ।
sa̱hasran􏰅̍i sahasradhaa bahuvosthava he'thayah􏰁̍ |
तासामीशानो भगवः पराचीना मुखाकृधि ॥
thaasaameesaano bhagavah 􏰁paraacheenaa mukhaakru􏰃dhi

Meaning:
Oh Bhagavan! Your both hands are holding thousands of all-powerful weapons, which have thousands of shapes and characteristics (to cause trouble to sinners). Please ensure that these weapons are turned away from us (though we have also sinned).anting this mantra.

Anuvagam 11

In this eleventh Anuvakam, Rudraganas, who are his parts, are worshipped. Thousands of Rudraganas, in groups of thousands, have been detailed by Parameswara in many parts of the world to either punish or reward creatures there in accordance with their karmas. It has been stated in detail in Veda, Mahabharata, Sivapurana and other texts that they are very great. This Anuvakam has as its sole purpose praying to those Rudras.

Rudra’s accomplishments are profusely praised and his benevolence is invoked with unconditional salutations. This Anuvaka is chanted for blessings of one’s progeny, the enhancement of longevity, visiting of sacred places, and acquiring knowledge of past, present and future.

Before we step into the eleventh Anuvagam, let us listen to Shri Shiva Raksha Stotram, written by Shri Yagnayavalkya Rishi. It was heard by him in his dream, as told by Shriman Narayan (Vishnu).
It is said that by reciting this stotram, with unshaken faith in mind, with devotion and concentration, one will conquer three worlds i.e. Swarga, Pruthavi and Pathala. Normally, this is recited during giri valam. In this stotram, we pray to Lord Shiva, praising him with His auspicious names, to protect each and every limb of our body. This is also a Kavacha like Skanda Sashti Kavacham, Devi Kavacha and Ram Raksha Stotram.

Mantra  1

सहस्राणि सहस्रशो ये रुद्रा अधिभूम्याम् ।
sahasra􏰅̍ni sahasraś̱o ye rudra adhibhoomyaam 
तेषाँ सहस्रयोजनेऽवधन्वानि तन्मसि ॥
the'sh􏰀aagm􏰂̍ sahasrayojaṉe'avadhanvaani thanmasi 

Meaning: 
Oh Parameswara, You have thousands of (innumerable) Rudraganas, in groups of thousands each, guarding and controlling the earth as lords, (capable of inflicting punishment or rewards). Let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us (as we are afraid they will hurt us if strung, we being sinners).

Mantra  2

अस्मिन्महत्यर्णवेन्तरिक्षे भवा अधि ।
asminmahathyar􏰅nave'ntharksh􏰀e' bhavaa adhi 

Meaning:
Oh Parameshwara. Ocean and sky are so large that they are beyond our measures. Similarly the greatness of the Rudraganas, who are the lords of these expanses, is also immeasurable. Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.

Explanation:

From this mantra upto the ninth mantra, the passage तेषाँ सहस्रयोजनेऽवधन्वानि तन्मसि’ should be added to each of them. In order to indicate that this should be so added, this passage has been repeated in the tenth mantra. 

Mantra  3


नीलग्रीवाः शितिकण्ठाः शर्वा अधः क्षमाचराः ।

neelagreevaa􏰁 sithikanta􏰅􏰇h􏰁̎ sarvaa adhah􏰁 k􏰀shamachara􏰁 

Meaning:

Oh Parameswara, these Rudraganas also have black necks (after consuming Kalakuta poison) and white necks (before taking the poison) and they move about  below the earth as lords. Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.


Explanation:
Rudraganas with abodes in many places have Sarupyam (same form) as Rudra; hence their forms are described same as Rudra.

Mantra  4


नीलग्रीवाः शितिकण्ठा दिवँ रुद्रा उपश्रिताः ।

neelagreevaa􏰁 sithikant􏰅􏰇aa divagm􏰂̍ ru̱draa upasrithaa􏰁 

Meaning:
Oh  Parameswara, these Rudraganas also have black necks (after consuming Kalakuta poison) and white necks (before taking the poison) and they move about in swarga Loka as lords. Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.

Mantra  5
ये वृक्षेषु सस्पिञ्जरा नीलग्रीवा विलोहिताः ।
ye' vruksh􏰀es􏰀u saspinjaraa neelagreeva vilohithaa􏰁 

Meaning:
Oh  Parameswara, like on earth and heavens, these Rudraganas also live in trees coloured like tender grass,    but with black necks and white necks; they move about as lords of trees. Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.

Mantra  6
ये भूतानामधिपतयो विशिखासः कपर्दिनः ।
ye' bhuthaanaamadhipathayo visikhaasa􏰁̍ kapardhinah􏰁̍ 

Meaning:
Oh  Parameswara, some of the leaders of the Rudraganas have no hairs and some have matted tresses of hair (and they look fearful). Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.

Mantra  7
ये अन्नेषु विविद्ध्यन्ति पात्रेषु पिबतो जनान् ।
ye' annesh􏰀̍u vividhdhyanthi paathre'􏰀shu pibatho janaannu 

Meaning:
Oh  Parameswara, these Rudraganas abide secretly in our food being consumed, (like milk etc and also in the vessels used for consuming food) to cause us trouble (according to our sin). Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.

Mantra  8
ये पथां पथिरक्षय ऐलबृदा यव्युधः ।
ye' pathaam􏰂 pathiraksh􏰀aya ailabrudhaa yavyudhah􏰁̍ 

Meaning: 
Oh  Parameswara, these Rudraganas, as bodyguards, protect, nurture and enable innocent and noble people, who are engaged in whatever paths, both mundane and Vedic and at the same time, prevent sinners from these paths. Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.

Mantra  9
ये तीर्थानि प्रचरन्ति सृकावन्तो निषङ्गिणः ।
ye' theerthaani pracharanthi srukaavantho nish􏰀an􏰆gigan􏰅ah􏰁̍ |

Meaning:
Oh  Parameswara, these Rudraganas are armed with sharp weapons, called 'srukaa' and swords and move around the banks of holy rivers to bestow  the benefits of the holy 'theertha' to the deserving. (They deny the benefits to  others). Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.

Mantra  10
य एतावन्तश्च भूयाँसश्च दिशो रुद्रा वितस्थिरे ।
ya e'thaavanthascha bhuyagm􏰂̍sascha dhiso rudra vithasthire' 
तेषाँ सहस्रयोजनेऽवधन्वानि तन्मसि ॥
the'shaa􏰀gm 􏰂sahasrayojane'ava dhanvaani thanmasi

Meaning:
Oh  Parameswara, these Rudraganas, more numerous and countless than them,   pervade in all directions. (There is no place where they are not present). Hence, let their bows remain unstrung and left thousand of yojanas from us.
Mantra  11
नमो रुद्रेभ्यो ये पृथिव्यां येऽन्तरिक्षे ये दिवि येषामन्नं वातो वर्षमिषवस्तेभ्यो दश प्राचीर्दश दक्षिणा दश 
namo rudrebhyo ye' pr􏰃̍thivyaa􏰂 ye'anthariksh􏰀e̱ ye' divi 
yeshaa􏰀mannam vaatho varsh􏰈􏰀amish􏰀avasthebhyo dhasa praachirdhasa dhaksh􏰀i̱naa􏰅 dhasa

प्रतीचीर्दशोदीचीर्दशोर्ध्वास्तेभ्यो नमस्तेनो मृडयन्तु ते यं द्विष्मो यश्च नो द्वेष्टि तं वो जम्भे दधामि ॥
pratheechirdhaso dheechir dhasordhvaasthebhyo namasthe'no
mrud􏰃􏰄ayanthu the' yam􏰂 dvish􏰀mo yascha no dve􏰀􏰇ishtim􏰂 tha vo jambhe' dhadhaami 

Meaning:
Oh  Parameswara, we offer our prostrations to these Rudraganas, who are on earth and who use the food we eat as their arrow (weapon) to torture the sinners (by making them eat too much of unsuitable food or by making them starve without food). 

These Rudraganas are capable of making wind as their arrow and torture the sinners by causing heavy winds to blow off their properties or cause diseases through wind.

These Rudraganas are also capable of making rain as their arrow and torture the sinners by causing very heavy rains or no rain at all.

We prostrate with all three instruments (mind, speech and body) and show our respects to these Rudraganas by folding our ten fingers facing east, south, west and north directions and also upwards to the sky.  Let these Rudras make us comfortable, by destroying those whom we hate and also those who hate us.

Mantra  12
त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।
thryambakam􏰂 yajaamahe' sugandhim􏰂 pusht􏰀ivardhanam 
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥
Oorvarukamiva bandhanaanmrtyormuksh􏰀iya mam􏰃ruthathu.

Meaning:
This is called the Mrithyunjaya Maha mantram.

We worship Sri Rudra with three eyes and having a sweet scent, Who is the augmenter of nourishment of everything. Let Him make us relieved from the bondage of samsara (but not relieve us from Moksha), just like the ripe cucumber smoothly and effortlessly separates from its stem and falls apart on its own. 

Mantra  13
यो रुद्रो अग्नौ यो अप्सु य ओषधीषु यो रुद्रो विश्वा भुवना विवेश तस्मै रुद्राय नमो अस्तु ॥
yo rudro agnau yo apsu ya o􏰀ushadhish􏰀u yo rudro viśvaa
bhuvanaa vivesa thasmai rudraaya namo asthu 

Meaning:
We prostrate to that Rudra Who has entered Agni as burning power, has entered the waters, has entered the herbs as medicine and pervades all the worlds and bhuvanams.

It is clear that as Sri Rudra pervades everywhere, we can attain good state anywhere and in all places by worshipping him. 

Mantra  14
तमुष्टुहि यः स्विषुस्सुधन्वा यो विश्वस्य क्षयति भेषजस्य ।
thamusht􏰀uhi ya􏰁h svishu􏰁sudhanvaa yo visvasya ksh􏰀ayathi bhe􏰀shajasya 
यक्ष्वामहे सौमनसाय रुद्रं नमोभिर्देवमसुरं दुवस्य ॥
yaksh􏰀vaamahe saumanasaaya rudra􏰂 namobhirde'vamasuram 􏰂dhuvasya

Meaning:
We prostrate to that Rudra Who holds excellent arrow, excellent bow, Who is in the form of all kinds of medicine. We  extol that very strong and brilliant Rudra, Who grants us abundant mental peace, augments our lifespan and protects us always.

Mantra  15
 अयं मे हस्तो भगवानयं मे भगवत्तरः ।
aya􏰂m me' hastho bhaghavaanayam􏰂 me' bhaghavattharah􏰁 
अयं मे विश्वभेषजोयँ शिवाभिमर्शनः ॥
ayam􏰂 me' vi̱svabhe'shajoyagm􏰂 si̱vaarbhimarsanah􏰁

Meaning:
My hands touch the auspicious idol of Sri Parameswara for performing Abhishekam, decoration etc. and hence  this hand of mine is fortunate. My hand is very fortunate indeed, as it becomes a medicine, capable of relieving from all diseases, by worshiping Parameshwara.

Mantra  16
ये ते सहस्रमयुतं पाशा मृत्यो मर्त्याय हन्तवे ।
ye' the' sahasramayutham paasaa mr􏰃tyo marthyaaya hanthave' 
तान् यज्ञस्य मायया सर्वानवयजामहे ॥
thaan yajnasya maayayaa sarvaanava yajaamahe' 

Meaning:
O Parameswara, You are in the form of Death and You use thousands and tens of thousands of instruments like Paasam (ropes) etc for torturing and catching all creatures and cause untimely death. Please put aside all those instruments, considering the strength of our good actions and grant us longivity.

Mantra  17
मृत्यवे स्वाहा-  मृत्यवे स्वाहा ॥
mrthyave' svaahaa mrthyave' svaahaa

Meaning:
To Sri Parameswara, Who is in the form of Death, this homam is being performed.


Mantra  18
ओं नमो भगवते रुद्राय विष्णवे मृत्युर्मे पाहि ॥
ohm namo bhaghavathe' rudraaya vishnave' mrthyurme' paahi

Meaning:
Prostrations to all-pervasive Sri Parameswara, Who is full of glories,  remover of the misery of samsara,  reliever from the bondage of samsara.  Please protect me always.
